District News.

TANIWHA. A very pleasant evening wai spent at Mr R. Sti rey’s residenci on Wednesday evening, 2nd inst. when the settlers and friends o Miss Martin tendered to her i "Kitchen Tea” prior to hei marriage. Dancing and cards were indulged in until mid-nighl when all took part in enjoying a very nice tasteful suppei specially arranged by the trio ink of Miss Martin. Many valuable gifts, which are too numerous to mention, were then opened tc the friends of Miss Martin for inspection. Mr F. T. Martin, in a very brief speech, thanked the residents for the enthusiasm shown to his daughter, while Mr R. Storey expressed the feeling of those present. The music, as played by the Misses Martin and Matehett, and Messrs H. Loftus and Matchett was all that could be desired, while the arrangements for the function were in the capable hands of Mesdames Carter, Storey and Bruce, and Misses Storey, Bruce and Carter. The weather is still very dry and what lit tle we had last week done little more than add to the contents of the tanks. The farmers here are backward with their preparations for the winter. There is very- tittle hay and it is almost impossible to prepare land for turnips on account of its hard nature. The pat crops are practically a failure, while the supply of milk s decreasing daily.
