Hard=Up Social

A HUGE SUCCESS. The ladies, who, with Mrs G. M. Fraser, were responsible for the “ Hard-up ” social held in the Miners’ Hall on Wednesday night on behalf of the Belgian Relief Fund, are to be congratulated on the great success attendant upon their efforts. The hall was crowded to excess, and the costumes as. worn by those present were not only novel, hut a credit to the ingenuity of their “creators.” Dress, ex •?p t in the form demanded, was rigidly eschewed, and no less than a pound was indicted in fines demanded' from those who contravened the rigid rules laid down against starched collars and the forms of attire that were barred. Flower girls sold their wares readily, while guessing competitions proved not only highly popular but increased the revenue considerably, as also did refreshments for which a small charge was made. The result was that the fund will benefit by some £3O, a sum that speaks volumes for the energy and canvassing prowess x of the ! ladies who in season and out of season advocated and worked for the cause of the suffering Belgians The weight-guessing competitions were won by Mr. F. Littleproud, and by Messrs. G. T. Horwood and S. Robinson (equal), the prizes for the most novel costumes being awarded to Mrs Geo. Edwards and Mr Jas. Wood. With dancing and music a most pleasant and enjoyable evening was spent, everything from the grand march to the grand finale passing off without the least hitch. To the general enjoyment the fine j selections by the Huntly Brass ] Band, and the excellent dance j music by the Huntly Orchestra | | added considerably, while the j various songs and glees were j much appreciated. Some idea of j the dresses and the audience can j he obtained from the fine and | clear flash-light photograph taken I by Mr. Robson. On the call of Mrs Fraser, who made <: neat and appropriate speech, hearty cheers were given for the Belgians and the allies.
