Huntly Town Board.

THE LOCAL ELECTORAL ROLL. A special meeting of the Town Board was held on Wednesday evening when there were present 1 Messrs L. B. Harris, junr. | (chairman),Geo. T. Hoowood, Jas. I Elliot, and the clerk, Mr F. Harris. The electors’ list was carefully gone over, the names of those who had left the district being deleted, and as many resident as could be thought of had their names added. There are now some 800 names on the main roll, a considerable decrease on that compiled three years ago. The chairman expressed surprise at the paucity of applications for enrolment received, and trusted that all residents who had been in the Dominion for twelve months, and had resided in the district for three months, would see that their names appeared on the supplementary roll. The meeting was of opinion that, as It was impossilbe for the clerk and members of the Board to know, or to remember all the names that ought to appear, it behoved the residents who desired to take advantage of their privileges to make a point of seeing that their names were added to the supplementary roll, and, in this way, avoid the disappointment that awaits them on the day when they attend the booth to registrar their votes in favour of the candidates whom they desire to see elected. A special meeting of the Huntly Town Board was held last Thursday night when there were present Messrs J. P. Bailey (chairman), L. B. Harris, junr., G. T. Hor wood, R. Greenwell, Jas. Elliot, and the clerk (Mr F. Harris). The motion that the general rate be one penny in the pound, as carried at 'the previous meeting, was confirmed. The clerk intimated that for the position of consulting electrical engineer ten applicants had responded to the Board’s advertisement. The qualifications of the candidates having been carefully considered, the number was reduced to four, the final consideration resulting in the appointment of Mr E. J. Fenn, Auckland, whose charge was 5 per cent on the capital expended. It was thought that during the present war crisis it might be difficult to obtain the money practically promised by the Public Trustee, while the shipping difficulties might prove an obstacle in the way of securing the material and plant necessary. The appointment of Mr Fenn was, therefore, made contingent upon the Board’s ability to carry out the scheme. Mr Wyllie, of Auckland, offered to sell a generating set with all switch gear for £BSO, that plant having been displaced in the Auckland City power house by more powerful machinery. The material offered was made by the Westinghouse Company, and was practically as good as new, so that the Board by purchasing the set would affect a saving of over £IOOO. It was decided to obtain a report from the consulting engineer. The Board decided to pay a deposit of £5 on each of the sections selected as the site of the power house, and to sign the agreement. The Beard then considered the question of holding a meeting in connection with the present war crisis, and after members had given full expression to their views the meeting, on the motion of the chairman, resolved that a public meeting of the residents he held in the King’s Hall on the evening of Thursday, 20th. inst., to appoint representative committees in connection with the War Fund, the meeting to be addressed by several speakers whose remarks would be limited to five minutes each; that the ladies of the town be especially invited to attend; and that, pending the decision of the meeting, no sectional contributions be asked or made, such, in the opinion of the Board, being detrimental to the success cf the general scheme.
