Mr Salmon, Morrinsville, was in Huntly on Wednesday when lie attended the Bachelors’ Ball. The amount paid last Friday as wages to the employees of the Taupiri Mines, Limited, reached a total of £3,800. The temporary approach to the bridge having dismantled, considerable progress is being made with the permanent steel structure which is now being placed in position. A grand concert in aid of the piano fund will be held in the new hall at Ohinewai t ;-night when an excellent programme will be submitted for the delectation of patrons. Mr Barlow, of the Now Zealand Home Builders, Limited, is visiting Huntly with view to interest residents in the objects of his company. The minor accident list for the week is confined to two cases which occurred in Ralph’s mine, Messrs. John Greener and Thomas Lindsay sustaining injuries to their fingers. Messrs Bedford and Dawson will speak on the liquor question in the Supper room of the Miners’ Hall on the evening of Tuesday, 28th. July, at 7. 30 p.m. The public are invited to attend. Mr Joseph Tabb was the winner of the sheep presented to the person whose guess as to its weight was most correct. The animal when dressed weighed 81V6 lbs., Mr T abb’s guess falling short by only half a pound. No fewer than thirty-six cases will ccme before Mr Rawson, S.M., at to-day’s sitting of the Magistrate’s Court. In addition to seven maintenance cases, and eight breaches of the Coal Mines Act, eighteen civil actions will be heard. Messrs Briggs and March, carpenters, are the sucessful tenderers for the new Post Office to be built at Bombay, the contract price being £BBO. Since finishing their several jobs in Huntly this firm nas built several fine residences, at, among other places, Manurewa, Waimai, Bombay, and Mangapiko. Mr E. J. Farrell lias received from the Colonial Ammunitfon Co. a handsome silver cake basket as a trophy to be shot for by the members of the local Rod and Gun Club. The conditions are that the trophy must he won three times consecutively before it can become the property of any individual member of the club, C.A.C. cartridges and clay birds to be used in the competition. In connection with the football match, England v. Auckland, to be played in Auckland to-morrow (Saturday), holiday excursion tickets, available for return on day of issue only, will be issued for the trains leaving Cambridge at 8.10 a.m. and Mercer at G. 30 and 8. 30 a.m The usual 4. 25 p.m. train, Auckland to Frankton, will run as far as Mercer only, the usual 5. 41 p.m. train, Auckland to Mercer, running through to Cambridge. The Art Union in connection with the Dog and Poultry show was drawn on Saturday night in the presence of Constables Ingram and Wright, and the undernoted duly declared winners of the various prizes:—G. Higgins, 1; D. Suttie, 2 ; G. McCalman, 3 ; J. McLennan, 4; H. A. Clinch, 5; Mrs G. H. Williams, 6. Owing to the name of the winner of the prize being somewhat undecipherable the holder of the ticket numbered 24, should communicate with the secretary, Mr W. Riggans. The three pupils from the Convent School who sat for the recent [examination in shorthand, typewriting and book-keeping, held in connection with the Federal National College, Sydney, were successful in gaining Honourable Distinction in each of the three subjects. The results of the examination reflect the utmost credit o:i all concerned, and the high marks obtained by the three young ladies will more than compensate them for the hard study involved. The marks areas follows: Miss C. Farrell, Book-keeping, 95, Type-writing, 90; Shorthand, 90; Miss K. Nicolls, 90, 90, and 90 ; and Miss G. Berry, 85, 90, and 85 in the übjecfcs as enumerated above.
