Huntly Town Board
The usual monthly meeting of the Huntiy Town Board was held on Thursday June 25, when there were present Messrs J. P. Bailey chairman), G. T. Horwood, Jus. Elliot, and the clerk, Mr F. Harris. Mr P. Watts who was desirous of approaching the Auckland Automobile Association on the question of metalling the Great South Road, requested information on the cost of metalling done by the Board, and in thanking the clerk for the replies to the- various questions stated that though not an expert in road-making he thought the Great South Road from Auckland to Hamilton could be metalled for £22.000 instead of the £200,000 estimated by Government. The District Traffic Manager of Railways wrote that the lamps complained of had been out of order and could not be lighted, while the District Engineer promised to remove the points from their position. The Raetihi and Raglan Town Boards in forwarding remits to be presented to the Biennial Orence of the Municipal jciation asked the Board to support the same. As the Board did not intend to send a delegate to the conference, which begins at Wellington on July 14 th., the ’•emits were received. he Public Trustee offered to lend the money required for the Electric Lighting Scheme at 5J4 % plus 1 per cent sinking fund, a reduction on the first offer made by this office. The Board decided to ask that the offer be kept open until the poll of the ratepayers had been takin. Mr J. H. Mackie requested to be furnished with particulars concerning the debentures which the Board proposed to issue. According to Mr C. C. Otway, surveyor, the ferry reserve on the east side Y>f the river had been dedicated in the usual way. The clerk was instructed to write and ask the Raglan County Council what was their intention with regard to the road when the completion of the bridge would render the punt service unnecessary. The Board was unanimously of the opinion that as this was the only means of access to the river, it should be strictly conserved for public purposes. The Taupiri Coal Mines, Limited, agreed to allow their offer of a site for a power station to remain open till the vote of the ratepayers had been taken. The chairman gave notice that at the next meeting of the Board he would move that the general rate for the year be one penny per pound on all ratable property within the Town District. The roll of the ratepayers having been gone through, the chairman, whose seconder was Mr Horwood, moved that the same bo approved, the motion being unanimously carried. Accounts totalling £246 2 ad were passed for payment.
