Huntly Town Board

L - -SPECIAL MEETING, e A special meeting of the Town n Board was held on Monday y afternoon when there were present Messrs L. B. Harris, junr., j’j (who presided in the absence of r the chairman), R. Greenwell, J. . Elliot, and the clerk, Mr F_ Harris. The chairman explained that information had come to hand r to the effect that the Public f Works Department did not in- , tend to proceed with the erection of the retaining walls in the , cutting in the Main Street. 3 Owing to the composition of the stratum forming the sides of the cutting—a very firfe pumice sand , —a wall was abolutely necessary to save those living in the neighhood, as well as those who used . the road and footpaths, from the deluge of dust that would be continuous during dry and windy weather, and the Board from an i expense for maintenance that . would become a serious burden , to the ratepayers. He was . convinced that no amount of hatter to the sides of the cutting would prove effective,, the erection of a strong retaining wall, sloping at any angle deemed necessary, being the only satisfactory solution of the of the problem to be faced. As he understood that the work on the cutting would be resumed on Tuesday, the clerk had been asked to call the present meeting in order that steps might be taken to get the Minister (Hon. W. Fraser), to carry out his promise. The members present, in agreeing with the remarks of the chairman, stated that they understood that the Hon. Mr Fraser, when he visited Huntly last Good Friday, had promised to erect the retaining wall when its necesity had been pointed put, and thought that he should be asked to fulfil such promise. It was decided to telegraph to the Premier, to the Minister, and to the memper for the district (Mr. R. F. Bollard) remonstrating against any alteration being, made in the scheme, and asking that nothing further be done in the cutting until the question of the retaining wall had been : settled one way or the other. Satisfactory replies were re- ] ceived by Mr F. Harris, from the < Premier and Mr Bollard, and ] when the Departments Inspect- ' ing Engineer, Mr Gavin, arrived \ in Huntly on Tuesday he was | seen by Messrs L. B. and F. i Harris in the morning, and again in the evening, Mr Greenwell ' heingpresent.it the later sederunt, i The matter was fully discussed ] from all poinls of view, with the i result that Mr Gavin, appreciating the Board’s attitude, stated that he would recommend the erection of the wall to the ; favourable consideration of his | Department. | i ’
