Newbury-Spada Company
A SPLENDID COMBINATION. A large percentage of the music loving public of Huntly attended a concert in the Miners’ Hall last evening by the New-bury-Spada Company, under the management of Mr Gilbert Manttan and those that assembled were privileged to hear some exceptionally good voices and concert items. Madame Newbury Spada was recognised by all as an artist of great reputation and experience and was especially pleasing in her song, “Good-bye” (Tosti). She has a charming soprano voice, the rendering and enunciation of this song bringing her great applause. As an encore she gave “ Don’t You Listen she also sang “Waita Poi,” a Maori Poi song, with great effect, the execution being greatly appreciated by the audience. She was also a partner to Mr Martin Duff in two duets, “Home to the Mountains ” (Ii Trovatore), and the “ Miserere Scene ” (II Travatore). The voices blended spendidly and well merited the round of applause given. Mr Martin Duff, the tenor, has a voice of wonderful power and range, and he certainly is the best tenor who has visited Huntly. Among other songs he sang, ‘ iMa ry of Argyle,” with great feeling. His robust fine voice brought him back again, and he obliged with “ Absent. ” By special request Mr Duff sang “ A Perfect Day,” and his rendition of this fine song well merited the round of applause given, “JTake a Pair of Sparkling Eyes ” proved to be a song much appreciated by all. Miss Major sang” the Rosary ” with fine effect, and responded with “ Happy Songs.” As an elocutionist she was much appr elated. Mr Henri Etienne, as an accompanist, left nothing to be desired. Mr Gilbert Manttan, with his bass-baritone voice, shone to perfection in “ Mv Old Shako,” and “ There’s a Land.”
