The Epidemic.
The mysterious epidemic which has attacked the northern part of the Dominion appears to be spreading, though slowly. With a number of erroneous reports going about, it is very difficult to g tat the absolute truth, but it can safely be said that matters are no worse than they are represented. The report that there are eight cases of small-pox in the Huntly District requires modifying. The fact is, that there are three cases at Waahi, two at Rangiriri on the east side of the river and one at Ohinewai on the west side. It is reported that the Rev. Evans lias developed a rash which is suspiciously like that j which is typical of the mysterious i disease, and as a measure of i precaution, he has been isolated, j while several contacts have been isolated also. We are informed however, that the attack, if it is of small-pox, is a vary mild one. All the natives who have been attacked by the disease have ro- ! cently been at Mangere, and pro- ( bably have brought the disease ! from there. i Instructions have now been : issue 1 to the police to as far as possible exclude Maoris from tiie j Huntly township. If these instructions are properly carried out, tiie risk of contagon should be reduced to the minimum. That the disease is somewhat more serious than was at first supposed, would appear from the j fact that several deaths have occured, two natives at Maungatautari having succumbed quite recently.
