Bishop Crossley in Huntly
The Bishop of Auckland, Dr. Crossley, visited Huntly on Thursday, 20th inst., and a good congregation awaited him at the last of tho Lenten week night services. The service took the form of shortened Evening Prayer with two addresses by the Bishop. Before proceeding with his addresses Dr. Crossley explained that he was present on his own invitation. During the week he ha 1 been visiting country clergy to help them and the people in the proper observance of Holy Week. The text for the address was ‘‘ And it was night." This (Thursday) night was the night of nights. It was so to every Jew, who knew that this night was the night of the Passover, commemorating the night when tlic Lord’s angel of Death passed aver the houses of the Israelites in Egypt an 1 s > obtained a deliverance. It was the night of nights on which Judas betrayed our Lord, Peter denied Him, end the rest of the Apostles forsook Him. It was the night if nights on which the Sacrament of our Lord’s Supper was instituted. Reference was made t > the fact that many people excused themselves from Communion sa> ing “ Unit they were not good enough, ” or were too sinful. He reminded such that Christ died to save sinners, and, therefore, if such people truly repented of their sin.., C unmunion with God would strengthen them to live a better life. He was glad to hear that the < vetting offertory was for the -.a ?uv Fund, a' it wit- only right that God’s Holy Table should be well kept, and he hop- 1 that all would he at the Lord's Table for Communion on F. inter Day. The people were exhorted to find out their particular sins and break away from them. Everyone had a particular sin : lying, dishonesty, impurity or intemperince. Jealously was a deadly • in, the root of which was envy m-i the fruit malice. When Christ was being crucified He prayed for those who were crucifying Him, saying, "Father, f a give them, for they know not .vhat they do". This prayer applied just as much to us as to them, for by continuing in sin, especially in a particular sin, they continued to crucify Him.
