A curious custom connected with the Servian Army is the way in which most Jof the regim tats carry the big drum. It is not, as in most countries, slung in front of the I man who plays it, but is placed , I upon a small two-wheeled cart , ! drawn by a large dog, which 1 has been so trained that it keeps its place even through the longest marches. The drummer takes up position behind the cart, and ' performs on the instrument us 1 it moves along. t s The most curious railway in the world, which is only in use 1 during the winter, is that be f between Cronstadt and Oranied t baun, which is laid upon tin r ice. Its success has suggested r the construction of a similar win ter railway between the twi important commercial centre! e Krementolnig and Jekatarinos lay, which are united in suinme e by the steamboat traffic alon, ® the river Dnieper. The mean of communication is closed it winter by the ice, and a lon( . costly roundabout journey ha o to be made between the tw r towns, though they do not lie fa apart.
