TO LATE CARDINAL CERRETTI.

SYDNEY, Dec. 26,

What the Roman Catholics of Australia intend to be the most beautiful memorial chapel in the Commonwealth is to be erected in memory of the late Cardinal Cerretti, former Papal Delegate t« Australia and New Zealand, as an adjunct of St. 'Patrick’s College, Manly, Syrney. A Commomvcalth-wide appeal for funds for the erection of the chapel will be inaugurated at a mammoth garden party to be held in the college grounds on January 7. The objective is £20,001). but later another appeal, for £30,000. to be spent solely on the interior of the chapel, will be made. It is expected that- the £20,000 will be in hand within several month.-..

Six months ago Rev. Father Gerald Bartlett administrator of St. Mary’s Basilica, and Rev. Father Clarke made an appeal to Catholics in all city and suburban churches for £14,000 for extensions to St, Columba’s College, Springwood and the modernisation of St. Patrick’s, Manly, both training colleges for priests. This money is ne win hand and Father Clarke, at St. Marys Basilica, i s organising secretary for the new appeal for the Cerretti memorial Some time ago Mrs Freehill, of Point Piper, started a fund for the chapel with a gift of £IO,OOO. The foundation-stone will be set in a few months’ time.

Solid marble altars, costly wc-rk s of art of all descriptions, gold and gemstudded sacred vessels, and, as Father Clarke states, “everything of the very best” will be incidentals of the sumptuous interior of the chapel around which in stained glass windows and memorials will be depicted the history of the Catholic Church in Australia.
