At tiie end of the third day’s play in the Plunket Shield .cricket match, Otago, holders of the Shield, are in a. VoJ-y strong position in their match with Canterbury. The home side on the fourth innings of the match need 436 runs to win and has lost two wickets for 52. ‘
Otago in the first innings scored 253 (Moloney 74, Uttely 49, Rudcock 49, Elihes 46, Uhettleburgh 44, Kavanagh 37). Bowling for Canterbury Roberts took 3 for 49, and Hope 3 for 99. , Otago in their second innings made ! 299 (Kavanagh 62, Uttley 54, Moloney | 44, Knight 32, Dunning 32. Bowling, I Riley took 6. for 89. I Canterbury’s first innings produced 217 (Hadlee 42, Lester 36, Hope 25, i xuley 20, Page 20). Badccck secured I 6 for 84, Nimmo 2 for 53 and Dunning 2 for 50.
Requiring 436 to win, Canterbury had scored 52 for 2 (Kerr 24, Roberts 1.8) when stumps were drawn.
AUCKLAND, V WELLINGTON
WELLINGTON, December 26
In the first innibgs, in the Plunket Shield match with Wellington. Auckland scored 233 (Vivian 64, AVlntclaw 59 ; Weir 84). For Wellington Blundell took 5 for 62. and Newman 3 fop st),
< Wellington replied with '209 (Ell 1 58, .Tamos 82, La mason 20),. Cleverley , took 3 for 58, and Matheson 3 for 49.
Auckland’s second innings produced 344 runs ’(Cleave 77 not out, Whitelaw 64, Vivian 47, Garrard 44 and Bush 37).
Requiring 369- to win, Wellington at stumps had lost 6 for 151 (Tindell 58, O’Brien 49).
N.S.W. V. VICTORIA
MELBOURNE, December 26
In the Sheffield Shield cricket match against New South Wales, Victoria in their first inning made 382, Darling scoring 91 and Ebeling 32. Bowling: Howell 5 for 97, O’Reilly 3 for 92.
New South Wales in the first innings scored 355 (Bradman 187 not out, Kippax 23). In the bowling Fleetwood Smith took 7 for 128 a n d Ironmonger 3 for 51. Victoria in the second innings lost'one for 64 (Ponsford 36).
QUEENSLAND V S. AUSTRALIA
ADELAIDE, December 26.
In the Sheffield Shield match against Queensland to-day South Australia in the. second innings lost 3 for 96 (Richjardson::69 not out).* South won by eight wickets.

NELSON, December 26.
The Hawke Cup match, Taranaki v Neson, commenced yesterday afternoon, on a batsman’s, wicket. Taranaki in the first made 384 (Betts 101, Giddy 128, Parkinson 57). Ralfe took six , wickets for 95. Losing fjve for 75, N e son ended the day with 234 for seven (Buddie 57, Morgan not out 20).
