On Wednesday afterhoon the Hokitika branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association held their annual Christmas Tree Party. An invitation was extended to the children of ex-service-men in the district, resulting in a very large gathering. The Hall , was tastefully decorated, as a winter scene, with a large Christmas tree, laden with toys, holding pride'of place in the centree. A strong ladies’, committee, catered for the children and the parents in the way of afternoon tea, soft drinks and ice cream. Santa . Clause arrived promptly at 3 o’clock, and was welcomed, on behalf of the children, by Mr W. E. Brown, president of. the branch. Santa Claus briefly replied and expressed his pleasure at being present. He then distributed the toys, and sweets to the children and to all appearances thoroughly enjoyed his afternoon among the little ones. The gathering was one of the most successful that has been held, and the increasing number of children that have to he catered for each year, testifies to the popularity of the function, and is a very commendable effort on the part of the R.S.A.
