Referring to the fact that the population of Melbourne is now less than 1,000,000' persons, the Victorian Government statist, Mr A. M. Laughton, said that the decline was accounted for by the drift from the city to'the country, which had taken place during the depression. The last official estimate of the population issued by him was 1,028,300 on December 31, 1932. The next Victorian return would hot be isued until .next year, but ' reports from municipalities indicated that there had been a decline.
