EXCELLENT SALE

FOZ CTAGO WOOL

HIGH PRICE STILL MAINTAINED. (Per Press Association — Copyright.) DUNEDIN. December 20. The ‘first' series of wool sales for the 1933-34' sfeason was -held to-day, before a full bench- of'buyers, all the purchasing countries - being fully represented. The sale exceeded the most sanguine i expectations, and from the start of the’ first catalogue until the final lots were sold, there was continued animated .competition. The catalogues contained a bigger percentage of fine wool than is 'usually auo-' tioned at the first sale. The quantity offered was also greater than in previous'seasons, the reason being a prolonged spell of fine weather, allowing growers to f shear earlier. In a good many cases shearing was advanced by a period of. four, weeks.,. The wool referred' was in lighter .condition, and. oh the whole,.. very attractive catalogues ’ were offered, recognised as being the best range, of K good wools offered to buyers this season.. It was anticipated that , the, lighter yielding and better quality clips would attract higher prices, and this anticipation was more than fully .realised, as tho market also showed a distinct firming, and it was undoubtedly ; the best sale of the season, Copmetition was general, with the Continental demand from France and Germany being a strong factor in the prices realised • for fleece- wool, and;New’Zealand mills > eagerly purchesed any lots' suitable for their -requirements, paving the highest prices of the .sale for fine halfbred and merino.' Bradford and Japan were also bidding spiritedly, the former especially' lifting a fair' proportion ‘of the catalogue. '.:U; ./

The sale of necks, pieces and other oddments was ,a phenomenal one, with Franee and Germaiiy -being the. keenest buyers! It’' is* some time since
