Mr Coates left, no doubts in the minds of members of the House this morning as to the Government s deteiminatiori to grant a rebate of 10 per cent, in the totalisator tax to racing clubs during the next financial year. Authority for, this is contained in the Finance Bill now be.'ore the House.
Mr Langstone (Waimarino) asked if the Government intended to put the clause through. <
The Minister: Would you prefer tha* the clause should stay out ? Mr Langstone: Yes, it is giving a waypublic moneys. The Minister (emphatically): Well, it is not going to stay out. I am going to see it- stays in and thjs House is going to see it stays in.
Mr A. J. Stallworthy (Eden): How can the Minister say that the House is going to keep it in? The Minister: I am going fo say- that the House will keep it in and will sup- 1 port ft.
Mr W. J. Broadfoot (Waitorno): It will bring more money in to the State eventually. Mr Langstone: Your racing club couldn’t, anyhow. Discussing the clause, flic Leader of the Opposition said that rabbit board subsidies were to be decreased and racing clubs wore to receive the benefit of a rebate of 10 per cent. That money- would represent what had been taken away- from the rabbit boards and old-age pensions. He claimed that as a sportsman lie would not ask for tlijs concession under those circumstances.
