A motorist writing of the South Westland glacier trip says: “’There is one good point about the drive to the glaciers, and that- is that the further one gets south rrom Otira, the better the scenery becomes. The almost terrible bush gets denser and denser, and the trees bigger and bigger; the lakes appear to become more numerous and more beautiful, while with every mile the great barrier of the Southern Alps seems to approach the highway and austere snow clad peaks overshadow one more and more. The culminating noint of the journey are the river s of ice—the glaciers.”
' Writing to the Otago Motor,Club, a member recently gave some very interesting details of the route from Otago into Westland. “I consider,” he said, “if any roading was to be done to connect Otago with Westland, I would recommend strongly this route through the Haast Pass. As you are aware, there is a car way through Makarora, for a distance of about seven miles further towards the Haast Pass. There is also a further distance of about six miles, all flat country before you come to the Fish River, to get a road through the Haast Pass I consider would not he very expensive, and the formation of the Westland side is nil fine shingle for miles.”
