IDENTITY SOUGHT
PEAK IN SOUTHERN ALPS
MOUNT COOK OR D’ARCHIAC
There has for many years been a controversy among the residents of Mid-Canterbury and mountaineers about the identity of a mountain peak seen on a clear day from the Main South road near Dromore. Some say it is Mount Cook; others that it- is a peak named d’Arcliiac in the Two Thumb'’Range. In Ashburton • the subject has been discussed for years. Some, who 'have knowledge of the hack country, say that- the peak is not Mount Cook, but the peak d’Arcliiac, in the Two Thumb Range, which they say is directly m line with the point mentioned on the main ,noad near Dromore.
Mr Guy Manner ing, of Christchurch, a well-known authority for many years on mountaineering subjects, said that Mount Cook was visible from the district- about Dromon.'. If it were ; Mount Cook that the correspondent and other persons saw, then it would appear like a tent from that point, with the northern end a little higher than the southern. Only a small part of the upper portion of Mount Cook could been seen. d’Archiac, in the Two Thumb Range, would definitely appear as a peak.
Another mountaineer said that the Tong top of Cook was seen from the east through a depression. The northern end might appear as a peak on a very clear day from Dromore. He considered that with these facts to go bv it would be possible from a person to determine for himself whether it was Mount Cook lie saw.
