“CHEER UP” CONCERT
The Salvation Army “cheer up” concert 'in All Saints’ Hall, wa s attended 'by a fine crowd of people last night. All the sea,is were filled, and a number had to be content with standing room only. The items rendered were in keeping with the name, and every performer exhibited a real “cheer up” spirit. It was said to be the best concert programme given in Hokitika for a long time. The ! Hokitika Band rendered a number of spirited marches outiside the hall Adjutant Duggan, who was. the chairman, brought a party from Grevmouth. Their items, which were well received, comprised instrumental and vocal items, also a tableau and some fine elocutionary items. Miss Evans, an old favourite, delighted the audience with a recitation. Misi? Mary Ne : !son also rendered two recitations. There was a clever sketch given by Miss Evans and Mr Frank Johnson. The ,S-Af.' girls’ gymnasium class, under the direction of Ensign Prowtse, give a fine exhibition of tumbling, drills and pyramids. The Ai’ahura. Maori party certainly acquitted themselves well, each item being loudly applauded. Most of the party received a well deserved e n core. There was'the haka, directed by Mr Jim Meson, the song and single poi. by Miss UnT and party, the ever-popular canoe poi by Mrs Tuhurii Tainui and patty. Mr.. K. Mason rendered a solo in fuu style on the steel guitar, and the . George Ibrothers charmed the audience with * duet on the Spanish and steel guitar, The accompaniments for the canoe poi were played by Mrs Tuhuru Tainui, *nd Mr George and party supplied the music on string instruments for the song and single pbi. Mis,, Malta T’inui was heard to advantage in a Maori solo and also a Maori duet wt : h Mr George. The leaders of the different parties are to be congratulated on the fine performance. It is quite evident, the high standard reached was only , the result of much hard practice. Ensign Prowse, thanked the performers for, their services and Mr Tuhuru Tainui on behalf of the' Maori party expressed pleasure at being allowed to take partThi s excellent programme • was brought to a (conclusion by the singing of a Maori song bv the full Maori party, and of the Rational'Anthem by the audience. ■
