LONDON, December 13
Mr Leopold Amcry, addressing the Empire League, said: “We . cannot gamble indefinitely with the foundations of the Empire’s existence, the seaways, which must be protected.” Mr R. Horne, referring to shipping subsidies, urged that very definite action be taken. He would say to foreign nations: “When it comes to the question of subsidies, we have as long a purse as you, and longer. If you are going to continue subsidies, we will run your ships off the sea.”
COUNTER-ACTION FOR TASMAN

The “Daily Express” says that Hen Alexander Shaw (the shipping magnate) is going to Australia within a few days to assist a conference to discuss a counter-action to American subsidised competition between Australia and New Zealand. ■
TASMAN DISCUSSIONS DENIED

The '‘Sun” is informed that the reports that Mr Shaw is going to Australia to participate in Australia-New Zealand discussions regarding American subsidised competition are absolutely unfounded. Mr Shaw sails by the Maloja on December 22 to inspect the P. and 0. organisation in India and Australia.
