Wellington, November 30

Damages amounting to £ls and costs, were .awarded by Mr Stilwell, S.M., today, against J. T. Owen, in a slander action brought by T. H. Johnston, plaintiff, who alleged the defendant ■need the words in public hearing on September 5 “I see they put you in gaol for stealing fruit. That’s where they ought to keep you,” when plaintiff had not beein gaol.

Another man of the same name had been before the Court for stealing fruit from an auction mart.
