Nearly £2 was stolen in pennies and threepenny pieces, while the thieves were not above taking apound of butter or a pot of cream left by the early milkman. Indignant househoders were surprised to find notes from milkmen pointing out that the money had been forgotten. Others blamed the milkmen for overlooking messages left requesting extra milk cream or butter, and many families commenced the day with a stern resolve t-o change their dairymen. More serious cases occurred at a number of bouses where bathing suits, shirts, underwear, stockings and handkerchiefs were missing from the lines in back yards. In some instances,' householders were not aware of the losses until the police, who recovered a quantity of the stolen property, after the arrest of two youths, made practically a- house-to-house canvass of the district, inquiring if anything had been stolen. Inquiries made by the police resulted in an exceptional number of Grafton residents visiting the polic e _ station during the day, to attemp to iden- j tify their belongings from the mis- . cellaneous assortment of cothing recovered in the morning. By- nine o’clock last evening, almost everything had been claimed.
