WELLINGTON, November 27

A Chinese hawker, Ching Pak Yet, aged 28, of Dunedin, was fined £25, land ordered' to forfeit over £IOO worth of silver and "old coins, when convicted in the Magistrate’s Court to-day? for attempting to export £24 17 s 6d in .silver .coin without a permit. Me pleaded guilty. Counsel Said defendant was t 0 have sailed on''the Monowiai. He had a fairly heavy chest, which on being searched, yielded £74 in gold coin and a little, under two ounces of gold dust. Most of the gold coin found, was concealed in two bars of laundry soap in the bottom of the chest. The silver coin was found in various articles of apparel in his chest, and on defendant’s .person. \

For the defence it was stated .that, defendant was going to see relatives in China, land was taking his savings with him as he had done previously. Other Chinese who wished to send money home, had secreted the money in soap go that it would not be stolen.
