HEAVY INDICTMENT
U.S. DRY LAWS IN VIOLATED. SEVENTY PERSONS GAOLED. (United Pree* Association—By Electrki Telegraph-Copyright.) , PHILADELPHIA, November 24. A Pennsylvania State Senator, John McClure, has : been convicted as the leder of the alleged Delaware Country 'Liquor “Protection” Organisation. He was given a sentence of IS months’ gaol, with 10,000 dollars of a fine.
•Ninety-six persons were indicted, of whom seventy were sentenced, and among whom are tlie chief clerk of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, also McClure’s private secretary, numerous detectives, alSo ward leaders and bootleggers. The trial lasted over seven weeks. .It is alleged that the political organdsation led by Senator McClure colected “protection” from the sly grog shops, the illicit- still operators, bootleggers,, smugglers, gamblers, and disorder house - proprietors.
It is estimated that the organisation has been in existence for ten years, and that it collected over 220 thousand dollars in a peak year.
