Two four-roomed dwelling houses, the property of the State Mines Department, at Rewanui, were destroyed by fire at 11.30 o’clock on Saturday morning. The Corsair Bay train excursion from Christchurch yesterday was favoured with mixed weather. It was fine till 2.30 p.m. when light rain fell. This came on heavier as the afternoon wore on and there was steady rain at 5 p.m. when the train left for Grey-mouth. Two trains came from Christchurch to Greymouth carrying 580 passengers, one coming on to Hokitika arriving at 10.30 o’clock. There were some 300 passengers on the train to Hokitika, which included a number from Greymouth. The train went on to Lake Mahinapua a couple of hours later, returning to Hokitika at 5 p.m. and going on to Greymouth, the trains leaving there at 11 p.m. and 11.30 p.m. an the homeward journey.
