DEPUTATION FROM MEN.

WELLINGTON, November 22. A protest against the conditins on public works jobs, was made to t ie Hon. J. Bitchener to-day by a deputation from the N.Z. Workers’ Union, with whom several Labour M’s.P. were associated. It was stated the men could not live on the present wage of 10/:per day, which after various deductions were made averaged about S/6 day for a five day week. They urged that the minimum rate ho raised to 12'/6. Other requests were that payment he made fortnightly, instead of, monthly; that the agreement between the Department and the men be reviewed; that public works employees he given quarter railway fares to enable them to visit their homes at Christmas; all piece rates to be increased by 3d per yard- that each man have a. tent to himself; that work he found for ail men who were engaged at Tawa Flat railway deviation. The Minister replied'that he had honestly endeavoured to improve--the-men’s position and would place the matters raised before Cabinet.
