HOKITIKA QUARTERLY MEETING

The quarterly general meeting of the Hokitika branch of (the R.S.A. whs held on Monday evening, there being •present, Messrs, J. L. s (chairman), R. Paterson, G. A. King, P. R. Whitford, T. Stuart, H. M. Coulson, L. Keriiahau, F. Burrows, W. Barrow, C. Hart, T. ICooper, P. Lloyd; E.. C. Toohey, Wright, A. Laughton and the Rev. H. J. W. Knights.

Apologies were received from Messrs W. E. Brown (president), and R. Appleton (vice-president), and. G. Gilchrist.

The attention of the meeting was drawn to the absence of any official observance in Hokitika of the two minutes’ silence on Armistice Day, members • being unanimous in their protests against this regrettable failure of any official action being taken to this important occasion. Th e following resolution was unanimously carried : -‘That this meeting views with regret the nonobservance of the two minutes’ silence on Armistice Day, and desires that the, matter be brought under the notice of the Mayor and Councillors in the hope that on future occasions, it will be fittingly observed. Inward correspondence was . with a is follows: Fro>i the secretary of the Flock House Scheme, advising the acceptance of H. R. Upjohn, of Ross,' as a trainee., and that admission would be made in January as suggested.—. Received. From the 1 Hokitika Ladies’ Hockey Club, asking a reduction of hall rent on the occasion of the ball for the relief of a sick member. It. was . decided to make the regular charge and a grant a donation of £1 towards the fund. From Mr B. Cropp, thanking the R.S.A. for the financial assistance inconnection with the search for .Mr Cox. From the Pensions Office enclosing a book of art union tickets in aid of Disabled Soldiers. It was decided to purchase the- book.

From a resident of Nelson, asking assstanee for the son of an ex-soldier at present in the Westland Hospital, for the purpose of buying tools of trade.* It- was decided that the secretary be empowered to purchase tools up to £l.' From Messrs Gordon and Gotch forwarding particulars of a'special issue of Smith’s Weekly of particular interest to ex-soldiers. —Received. From the Australian Performing Rights- Association regarding, outstanding account for performing rights license. It was decided to write Headquarters protesting against the payment of license fees to the A.P.R.A.) and requesting them to take action against the practice. From the’ Christchurch branch regarding an advance to an ex-soldier proceeding to employment.—Received... . : . From the Kumara branch forwarding - list -of new members, and advising that the number of unemployed at Kumara at present is 11. From Headquarters regarding a reissue of badge to a member, and asking consent of this branch. It was decided to recommend the re-issue. The Waimate branch advised that the membership ofy their branch is "at present 125. (Hokitika 126.) From Headquarters, regarding the unofficial use of the association’s badge arid stating that such use is not- permitted. . From same regarding the care Pt soldiers’ grave^. —Received. From same, advising that the Canteen Fund allocation grant for October is £8. —Received. ' It was decided to send a letter of thanks to Mrs Hatch for the donation of a print of a Mosaic Pavement found in Palentine during the excavations of trenches during the war. It was decided to approach the Canteens Board through Headquarters to double the grant of December’s allotment for the relief of unemployed, and that payment for November and-Dec-ember he made before the middle of December.

It was decided to, hold the Christmas tree party as usual, and that the eligable age for toys from the Christmas tree be limited to eight years, but that the children of all ages be entertained as usual. The date of the party is to becided later.

The meeting then adjourned for a social hour.
