A CENTENARIAN
CELEBRATES BIRTHDAY

HASTINGS, November 30.
Mrs Mary' Ann Adamson of Hastings, celebrates her on e hundredth birthday to-dajy, /thus becoming the district’s first centenarian. She has lived ninetyeight yeans in New Zealand having come here with lief parents from Hobart, her birthplace, in 1835. She has lived in Hawke’s Bay for about seventy years. Among her memories are having seen Hobson sign the Treaty of Waitangi, /the destruction of Washill flagstaff bv Hone Heke, and a public hanging in . Auckland. r ■ James Busby’s children were her playmates, when she livqd in the Bay .of Islands. She was present at Hobson’s funeral at Auckland.
.To-day she was visited by the Mayoi (Mr Maddison) who presented her with a gift of a silver cup on behalf of the townspeople. Rev. Shaw (Presbyterian), who was another visitor, remarked: “She’s the oldest member of the Presbyterian congregation in New Zealand.” Among the telegrams was one from the Governor-General.
