ELECTION INCIDENTS
WOMEN’S FIRST VOTE

(Received this day at 12.30 p.m.) MADRID, November 19.
Following a. night marked by strikes, violence, and -shootings, in several cities, polling opened,quietly in most places. No forecast of the result is expected until to-morroiv, owing to the complicated voting system. This is the first ordinary Cortes election, since the establishment of the Republic.
The presence of women, enfranchised for the first time in their lives enlivened the proceedings. All day the streets wore crowded, there bring long queues outside of every polling booth, in Avhieh women largely preponderated. Crowds in the capital were mostly ordinary. There .were armed guards at every booth and lorries mounted with machine guns at all strategics points. Mounted police patrolled the streets.
There were many serious clashes between the rival factions in the provincial cities.
A right Aving election agent Avas shot dead and several others seriously wounded in Valencia where thirtyfive Avere arrested, after the discovery •of a store of bombs, dynamite and firearms. \
One person Avas killed and seven wounded at Seville, when twenty anarchists brandishing revolvers shot point blank at a number of right wing polling officers going on duty. One persons Avas killed and tAA r o wounded at Tor-rente where socialists attempted to break the ballot boxes. A nephew of the Prior of Montserrat Monastery was seriously Avounded Avhen gunmen shot into a car i n which, he Avas taking a number of monks to the poll.
