Flying-Officer Matheson left Hokitika at 11 a.m. on Friday, picked up a passenger at Greymouth, flew to Christchurch, and returned to Hokitika, where he picked up a lady pas-
senger, who caught the ferry steamer from Nelson for Wellington at 7.30 o’clock the same night.
The Minister for Labour (the Hon. Adam Hamilton) promised a deputation form Labour members of Parliament that he would look into a request for a change in the date of Labour Day to the third Monday in November. The objection to the present date, the fourth Monday in October, is on account of the weather, and November was thought to be a better month for weather. The Minister’s attitude was that the request was reasonable.
Steady booking has begun for the ■excursion arranged by the Christchurch Corsair Club, leaving at 1 a.in. on Sunday, November 26, for the West Coast, Greymouth, Hokitika, anti Lake Mahinapua can all be visited the same day, the extra- train returning to Greymouth early .m the 'evening, -.ne New Brighton Municipal Band, assisted by talented Christchurch artists, is arranging a concert programme to be given on the Sunday night in
Greymouth. Boating and other pastimes will be provided for the visitors at Lake Mahinapua. The excursionists wili leave at 11 p.m. on 'their homeward journey.
It is not generally known that it is an offence punishable by six months’ imprisoment .to -sell or buy or even receive as a gift a military decoration. In the Magistrate’s Court, proceedings —probably the first of their kind in Auckland—were taken against a retired pawnbroker, Moss llobinson, for unlawfully purchasing a ' King’s (South African War) medal, and also against a young man, Rupert George Bell, for unlawfully selling the medal. Both men pleaded guilty. Robinson was fined 10s, and Bell was convicted and discharged. The prosecution was brought under Section 3 of the Military Decorations and Distinctive Badges Act, 1913, which legislation was passed in the latter stages of the Great War with the object of preventing the abuse of military decorations and orders.

The monthly meeting of the R.S.A. executive takes place this evening and is in the form of a quarterly general meeting. The appointment is announced of Rev. W. A. Beaumont, of Cobdeii, to be Vicar of Aliaura, in succession to the Rev G. A. Barker. The vacancy at Cobdeu lias not yet been filled.
The first haul of gold at Wellington for some months was made on Friday, when the Customs Department seized
nearly 100 sovereigns, a small quantity of gold filings and a quantity of silver which was found in the possession or a Chinese booked to sail for Sydney by the Monowai, eu route to China, The Chinese and his possessions remained b,hind when the Monowai sailed.
During the week eml the County authorities made a raid on wandering stock on the roads in the Kokatam district, and several were impounded, and subsequently released on the payment of "the fees. At the recent meeting, complaints were made in respect to stock wandering at large and being a menace to the motor traffic in particular.
The payment of old age pensions by post was advocated by Ivlrs E. R. McCombs (Lab., Lyttelton) in a question which she addressed to the Minister for Pensions. At present, she said, aged persons, many of whom were frail and in delicate health, were required to attend the pensions office in person, and to state their business publicly. She asked whether, in order to avoid the necessity for their attendance, j the Minister could arrange for paynnent to bg made through, the PostOffice. 4
After completing hj 6 refresher course at Wigram, Mr J. D. Renton left Christchurch on Saturday, with Mr J. D Lynch, of 'Christchurch, as passenger, for Blenheim and Nelson, in a Canterbury Club Moth plane, Z-K. AAJ. The plane flew over Picton but did not land at Blenheim. The plane went on to Nelson, landing after a two and a quarter hours’ flight. The machine took off again at 2.20 p.m. on .and, ,after 'flying dow over Reefton and Greymouth, landed at Hokitika at 4.50 p.m.
Members of the Hokitika Surf Club held a dry run-out on the beach yesterday, and the practice was by great keenness. The public may look forward in the near future to an efficient surf, live saving team ready in any case of emergency. It is the club’s intention to concentrate cn the formation of a really efficient team at present, to be followed by other teams later. The need for surf clubs along the coast is being readily recognised, and Greymouth is training two or three teams, while a club has been former at Seven Mile.
