At a meeting, of the directors of the Hokitika Gas Coy., Ltd., yesterday, the usual half-yearly dividend of 2s fid per £6 share was declared. The reports before tlie meeting indicated tile plant in good order, and an increase for the period in the output of gas. Tests carried out by the research officers at Christchurch give satisfactory reports as to the quality of the gas manufactured, and to the content of the tar available at the local works. The work performed by the staff over the period was appreciated •
The Westland County Council is carrying out a. section of widening and raising on the Kokatalli highway which should be of value to general, traffic) particularly in flood time. Thd effect of tlie work dti hand should be to render the I‘oad passable ih all weather conditions for motor vehicles. At times in the past motor traffic has bee n interrupted due to backwater flooding the road, and holding up . the motors. The raising of the highway at the danger point should remove the risk in future.

Advice has been received of the death at Sydney last month of Mr Henry Weber, ;a former resident of Hokitika and Greymouth, where he carried on a well-known tailoring business with his brother, Mr Jacob Weber, Deceased was a native of Birmingham, England and 67 years of age. He leaves a widow (Amelia, a niece of late Mr and Mrs Pollock of Hokitika), and a grown up son and daughter. Some 30 years ago the deceased removed to Sydney where he had since resided.
Tlie monthly meeting of t.ho Franz Josef Women’s Institute wn s held on Thursday, November 16. General business, the roll call, “Sing, - say or a, penny pay,” and a,n -,ampsing Competition won by Miss K. Graham, occupied some minutes. The remainder of the eVeiiiiig was devoted to a lantern lecture by Miss Jordin of Dunedin, on her travels in the Near Fast,. Patontim'j Cyprus, Rhodes, Greece, and Portugal. This was most interesting and was much enjoyed by all present. Miss Jordin also showed some beauti’ul souvenirs of her travels, samples of hand crafts from the different countries she visited. Hostesses for the evening were Mrs A. C. Graham and Miss M. Graham, who served supper, bringing tlie proceedings to a close.
The monthly meeting of th e Harihari Women’s Institute was held on "Wednesday, November 15. There was a. large attendance in suite of the inclement weather. Mrs Berry presided. The roll call wa s -‘Mv favourite flower.” Extracts from the report of the North Canterbury-West Coast Federation (meeting held in Grey mouth, were read, a s this Institute had no representative present at the meeting. Pleasure was expressed" at one of our members, Mrs McKay, being elected to the committee of the West Coast Fedoration. After the business of the meeting had been completed, Mr Newccmbe, gave a very interesting and instructive address on,English rural life and customs, particularly relating to Devon. The competition for a vase of flowers was won by Mrs Levett, and for the prettiest apron made from a flour bag, by Mrs St. George.

Castle Point 232 tons, Wallsend -836 tons, Dobson 566 tons, Rriandale 442 tons, other minty., • 2844 tons. During the same period 1,249,115 superficial feet of timber was exported.
The funeral of ‘ the late Mr David A. Clark, of Koiterangi, took place yesterday afternoon from his sister’s residence, Sale Street, and was attended by a large and representative gathering of mourners, over forty cans taking part in the procession, the country district being specially represented. The Rev. G. A. Naylor conducted the services at the jresidetn'ce and graveside. Many floral tribute,-, were received from sorrowing friends.
