SYDNEY “SUN”
DEBATE IN FEDERAL HOUSE,
MEMBERS’ SALARY COMMENT.
(Australian Press Association).
CANBERRA, Nov. 16
The Federal House of Rpersentatives to-day had a further- discussion on Mr Ward’s motion to summon, the printer and publisher of the “Sunday Suri” to the Bar of the House for the paper’s reference to the House’s votG to increase members’ salaries.
Mr Latham, Acting-Prime Minister, intimated* that a letter had been rceived from the Board of Directors of Associated Newspapers Ltd., defending the “Sunday Sun’s” action in condemnig the salaries increase under the existing conditions, and declaring that public opinion was behind them. The Board,; however, deprecated the verbage that had been employed in the offending article, and assured Parliament that imputations made as to the dishonour of members had not been intended. They expressed regret that there should have been any misunderstanding. Mr Latham suggested that, in all of the circumstances, the motion of. Mr Ward should be withdrawn, and that the House should take no further action.
Messrs Ward, Beaseley and other Labourites hotly resented, the idea- of withdrawing the motion and , demanded that the “Sun’s” registration should be suspended, and all Federal advertising withheld from it fop six months, and that Parliament’s honour and privileges should be - vidicated. The motion was defeated by 4'i to 2.
