NEW ANAESTHETIC
BRITISH DOCTORS’ EXPERIMENT LONDON, November 11.
Evipan, a new anaesthetic which is injected into the veins of patients, produces a deep sleep within two minutes and the unpleasant sensation* of chloroform or ether are eliminated. British doctors are now experimenting with thi s drug, but up to the present it has not been sufficiently tried to make fully sure of the safety factor. None the less several hundred operations have been performed an London hospital,* with Evipan. One defect of Evipan is that it does not give complete relaxation, which is essential in certain classes of operation, and the longest period for which it has been used is half an hour. It is not yet known whether it would be s afe to prolong the period so that it can be used for a longer operation. Not everyone can take an injection either, but in elementary operations the new anaesthetic has been found very helpful. Evipin is a derivative of the veronal type of drug which i s used in common sleeping draughts.
