N.Z. HERALD

70th ANNIVERSARY.

AUCKLAND, November 13.

The.. seventieth birthday of the “New-’Zealand Herald” was celebrated at the happy, gathering attended by more ■ than 300 employees in all departments of the business of Messrs Wilson and Horton, Limited, and called for the purpose of offering congratulations to the directors, and. presenting them with a gift to mark the Occasion, ‘

Speaking on behalf of the present staff, Mr K. M, Hacket, the editor, said the meeting had been called be* cause the staff felt the day could not be allowed to pass without conveying to the directors in person congratulations in addition to those which they had already received from outside on the seventieth birthday of - : tbe newspaper.' “Many kind and ’generous things have been said about tide ‘Herald’ this morning,” continued Mr Hacket. “I am not prepared to say that other kinds of things have not been said about us from time to time, but if a newspaper does its duty fearlessly it cannot be all things to all men. However, these congratulations serve a good purpose in that they show the respect and esteem in which the ‘Herald’ is held —in which, indeed, it has always been held—by the community and by journalists, other persons who do the same work elsewhere.”

Mr Hacket handed to Mr W. RWilson a silver inkstand for use on the board room table, and bearing tlie following inscription: “To the directors from the staff; November 13, 1933,;' seventieth annivensarf of the ‘New Zealand Herald,’ 1863-1933.”
