ON murder charge

The trial was continued yesterday of George Edward James, who was charged with murdering Mrs Cecilia Smith, and to which‘he pleaded not'guilty. In reply to a. question by the accused’s counsel (Mr Leicester), Telford Richard Williams, who. lived in Middle Flat, 27 Ohiro Road, said that it was about five minutes after he heard screaming that fie heard Airs. Smith sav : “Oil, George, go for. a doctor.. I ant done.” It'was about an hour after when he saw James and the boy leaving tlm house. During that time, he did noti hear the boy crying or Had the boy been crying or screaming aloud, he would have heard him.
Richard James Browh, a college student, said 'that on the .mo'rhirig of June 30 he saw’ the accused and the boy outside of -27, Ohiro Road. The accused was wheeling a- bicycle, and the boy was heard to say; “Are wo going for. a.'ride on the bike, Daddy :”. The accused said: Later witness saw hini on. the 'bicycle with the boy on the crossbar, u Tlio finding of the boy’s body was described by .Francis John Gni, and evidence was also given regarding the accused’s fescue from the harbour. A letter, found on tho wharf, and commencing: “Nancy, you see what you have brought' me' to,” arid sighed “3'our * brokeh-hearted '^father, ' G. James,” which was produced at the Lower Court ‘.proceedings,' was i also 'read. \ ; :•
Dr O'. Nissen stated .'that, during his stay in hospital, accused was depressed and worried.,; When interviewed by the police on July 2, die was in a fit state to make a statement.
