Further startling evidence in the sulphuric acid trial included that of a chemist employed in a Marseilles pharmacy, declaring that, in 1925, a man named Garrotte, who had beeM the lover of Philomene Schmidt, had access to the poison, of which there was sufficient to kill fifty, and a quantity was found missing. The prosecution produced documents allegedly signed by Deltreuil, Catherine Schmi(|Vs formed husband,' proving that Deltreuil, a chemical inventor, had been able to obtain various acids. Catherine’s counsel declared the documents were forgeries. ’l’he prosecution also read letters from Mother Herb;n revealing that, three months after a consumptive’s death, Catherine wrote, ostensibly on behalf of Herbin, stating: “Our dear little friend is unable to Write owing to an injured finger.” Catherine declared that Sari'ett had dictated the letters. Georges Sarret ,thc accused lawyer, and his daughter, dissolved into tears when, following the collapse nnd removal from the Court of.Sarret’s first wife, Madame Bertrand as she attempted to testify, the prosecutor read her statement made prior to Sarret’s arrest. His second wife, Madame (Airaud, also weeping,’ testified that- Sarret bad given her many articles belonging to the murdered priest, Father Cbambon, in whose villa Sarret- lived for three months after Father Chambon’s death.
