The east coast gale is causing the worst storm for twenty-five years. Hundreds of tons of cliff collapsed at Lowestaft, sending gardens tumbling Into the sea, and leaving houses within a few feet of the cliff edge. Thirty feet waves washed the roof off the pier pavillion at Scarborough where tile seafront is littered with chimney pots and tiles. Bridlington Bay is crowded with sheltering ships.
