LIQUOR STOLEN
BY MEN PROM RELIEF CAMP. FOREMAN DENOUNCED. (Per Press Association—Copyright), AUCKLAND, October 25. The conduct of a foreman who had been placed ill charge of young men in a relief camp was denounced by counsel in the Police Court, when three young men admitted stealing beer and whisky from a ledge hall at 'Pukemiro and doing £lO worth of damage. The men were before the Supreme Court the other day on other ■charges, and two were sentenced to imprisonment.
Counsel, Mr Noble, said that a shocking state of affairs had been disclosed. These young men who hid never been in trouble before, had to enter a relief camp or starve.- They were put in charge of a foreman who gambled with them ; acid. Avon what money they had. -He also supplied, them with a house-breaking implement.' Counsel said : There should be .g, Dominionwide outcry about this case, but nothing has been slid or done, even by,, the churches. .. . The Magistrate (Mr Hunt), said that he was . not going to give , them extra punishment. ; ' They ;, would be convicted and discharged. Counsel mentioned that the foreman' ■ six" months’ imprisonment. :
