Wintry weather prevailed for the opening of the Labour Day week-end in Christchurch, heavy rain, snow and sleet all being experienced within the last 24 hours. Rain set in steadily early last evening. The air ' wins then bitterly cold', but. another drop in temperatures at about 4 p.m. to-day, wa s followed by a fall of snow • lasting for an hour on Port Hills. There was four iirhes o.‘ snow on the summits. In the mid-morning there \yas ,a heavy snowfall in the city. Heavy rain has fallen in the country districts, and has broken a long drought wh;ch threatened the farmers with another disastrous summer.
