The mouthy meeting of the Franz Josef Women’s Institute was held on Thursday, October 19. The first part of the meeting was devoted to general business after which Mrs Morgan, group convenor of the Aliev ton branch, gave an interesting talk /u the works of the Women’s Institute. The roll call was a household hint. Competitions were as follows:—(1) A vase of mixed flowers, won by Misses Iv. and M. Graham, Ist equal; (2) best six pikelets, • won by Mrs Pope sen. The entertainment part of the programme was provided by Miss Hounsell who spoke on folk dancing and gave demonstrations assisted by six members. Miss Theomen sang two songs of the Hebriides. An appetising supper brought a successful meeting to a close.

The central firebell at Greymouth sounded an alarm this shortly after mid-night, there being an incipient outbreak at the Dispatch Foundry in wooden compartments where the workmen’s clothes are kept. It was extinguished without much damage resulting.

The Commissioner of Taxes draws the attention of taxpayers to the notification appearing in to-day’s issue that the clue date of payment, of Land-tax for the current year is on Tuesday, the 7th day of November, 1933, ancl that the demands will he posted on or about the 31st day of October.

At All Saints’ Hall on Thursday evening there was a large attendance at the A.S.Y. Men’s dance. The winners of the fox trot- competition were Miss P. Olson and Mr A. Singer. The committee have arranged for a special silver cup to be presente'd to the best aggregate for the season in the special dancing competitions.

The value of bullion obtained by the Kimu Flat dredge during the year end, ed December 31; 1932 wns 92,079. The total for Okarito was £13,869 and for Awatuna £660. The Kimu Dredge last year put through 2f million cubic yards of material from which 14,5240 z of gold was produced. The Okarito dredge at the end of last year had won 23260 zof gold. The Awatuna dredge showed a decreased return, only 106qz of gold being won.
