Empire uni foraiity in the law relating to nationality i s accepted by the Government as a desirable principle, and legislation dealing with the subject ie. likely to be promoted. Replying in the House to Mrs McCombs (Lyttelton), who 'had asked lor- legislation enabling a New Zealand woman .who marries an alien to retai. n her own nationality, the Hon. J. A. Young stated that the Government for some time had been seriously considering the question of nationality of: married women. Views on the subject had 'been exchanged with the imperial Government, which had also been in consultation with other dom-
inions. ; The New Zealand Government had alite'idy given provisional instructions tor the preparation of. legislation,' hut ■ t|ie nature of it was ' dependent upon , 'the precise form in .which .proposals now. before the British Parliament be- !' came law. T’he Now Zealand Parliament could- not of itself confer' British inationality on women which would have effect beyond Dominion territory, but toy: .the adoption•* af the Imperial law the full Istitus of British subject, recognised throughout ‘the world, was conferred.
