MR P. C. WEBB IS SELECTED.

WELLINGTON, October 17,

Mr P. C. Webb, formerly Labour M.P. for the district of Grey, and one of the pioneer (Labour members of the. New Zealand- Parliament, has 'been selected as the candidate of the La-, bour Party for the Buller by-election. In announcing the selection of Mr Webb, the national executive of the Labour .party has issued the , following* statement:—

“A meeting of representatives oi all trades unions and Labour party branches in the Buller electorate was held at Westport, during the weekend. Mr Mark Fagan, M.L.C., represented the national executive of the party. The question of a successor to the late Mr H. E. Holland as Labour candidate for Buller wa s fully discussed. It was .decided to submit four names for consideration .to the jmkional executive, ; with |whom, according to the Labour party’s constitution, (rests the final decision in respect to the selection of a candidate at a 'by-election. • "The representatives present unanimously resolved to support which of the four nominees 'would be selected by the national executive. The four names forwarded were; Messrs P. C. .Webb, J. Smeaton, R. Holland, and J. Thorn. The national executive met this morning. Two of the men whose names were submitted by the Westport meeting we're not available a s candidates. Mr P. C. Webb was selected, and he will contest the seat in the interests of Labour.”
