FAUNA AND FLORA IN AFRICA
PROTECTION MEASURES SOUGHT

RUGBY, October 16. The protection of African ’ fauna and flora, by means of a revised international convention, will be the chief purpose of a conference which will meet at London on October 31, and at which the Governments of Great Britain, Abyssina, Belgium, Egypt, France, Italy, Portugal/ Spain, and the Anglo-Egyptian ' Sudan, will be represented. • ■ t The Governments ■of India, the United States, and the Netherlands have nominated observers. The chief British delegate, Lord Onslow, will preside. Other British delegates will be Sir William Gowers; Senior Crown Agent for the Colonies; : Sir Arnold Hudson, Governor of Sieirra Leone; and Mr A. B. Aoheson Colonial Office. ■n>A draft convention' for use'- as a basis of discussion has been circulated to the other Governments by the Uni-' ted Kingdom Government. It con* tains suggestions for an agreed ■ declaration of principle on tbtv establishmoiit of national sanctuaries, ill which wild animals and plants may be proiserved, with due regard to the interests of the native inhabitants of -the various territories concerned, and it also proposes measures to restrict the j killing of some of the rarer species | of African.;, animals. It also , deals with various otyjectionable methods of hunting, and other practices which have a destructive effect upon wild life, and is designed to secure co-operation between the various administrations.
