DOUBLE DROWNING
FAR NORTH AUCKLAND TRAGEDY

AUCKLAND, October 16.
Swept off a rock by a huge wave, two people lost their lives at dusk on Saturday at Cape Maria Van Diemen lighthouse. They were Airs Winnie Elizabeth Newgon, wife of one of the assistant light-keepers, -and Frederick Gaze, second assistant keeper.
They were fishing from the rocks .in .company with Air Newson. High seas bad been running for several days, ■ar.d cross currents in the narrow channel separating the island in which the lighthouse stands from the mainland, tended to make the waves vary greatly in size. Newson eventually succeeded in recovering his wile's body, hut, though artificial 'respiration continued for two horn’s, it was of no avail. The settlers are searching for Gaze’s body. The Coroner and a police constable go •north to-d.iy, and. if possible to reach the island, will conduct an inquest.
The others on the island are the young head-keeper and Newson’s two young children. Mrs Newson was the daughter of Mr and Alr.s C. 0. Oden, of Tawa Road, 'Oneliunga.
