On September 28 Cox, who had been living nr a hut in tlic Hokitika river bed, set off to cross the ranges via the Whitcombe Pass into Canterbury. Some concern was left lor bis safety when nothing was heard ol him for a few days, hut it transpired that- Cox had made an attempt to cross, but missing the way, had returned to the Styx Hot where he was awaiting favourable conditions before start.ng again. Over a week has now transpired, but the police and residents on the other side, who have been keeping a look out, for him, report that nothing has been seen.

it is considered that Cox has Set out again, and his non-appearance, together with the fact that his food supply is limited, has led to the fear that something may have happened, and a search, party, consisting- of Constable U. Drummond, and Messrs Bert Cropp, P. Diedriehs, and I). Heinz, set out by car for the Styx river at 1. o’clock this afternoon, and will comb the district adjacant to the route via the Pass. The party expects to return by Saturday night.
