At an inquest held at Wetsport on Thursday on the death of Mr James Reid, who was killed in the Stockton Mine, as a result of a fall of coal, the Coroner returned a verdict that death was due to shock and suffocation caused by a fall e.P coal. Every precaution had been taken, and the happening was a pure accident. The Coroner extended the sympathy of the Court to the relatives of the deceased.
Although no formal announcement has been made, it was evident in the •House of Representatives that Mr J. A. iN,ash 'Palmerston) h a s succeeded to the position of Government whip occupied by the Hon. J. Bitchener before his promotion to the Ministry. Mr Nash hats moved from his bench to sit with Mr A. J. Murdoch (Marsden). who i-s the Government whip on the United party’s side, and in the awkward situation that arose following the sudden moving of the second amendment by Mr R. A. Wright, he conferred frequently with Mr Murdoch and with the leaders of the Government.
There was a good attendance at the annual meeting of the Arahura Tennis Club which was held last Thursday evening. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed and the following officers were elected: President, Mr M. Mandl; clu,p captain, Miss K. Token and Mr E. Olson; secretary, Miss J. Havill. It was decided that the. court be opened on Sunday October 8. Messrs Mandl and E. Olson were nominated to attend a meeting of delegates from other clubs to decide whether it would be advisable to have a cup for competition. It was moved and seconded that the subscription be the same as last year. The meeting closed with a hearty vote of thanks to the chair.
