broadcastinc board (Per Pre s s Association, Copyright). WELLINGTON, September 28. The first annual report of the New Zealand Broadcasting Board, which was presented to-day by the Hon. ; A. Hamilton, is for the year ended December 31, 1932, and was actually signed 'by the chairman and members of the board on January 31 of this year. Most of the information contained in the report, particularly regarding improvements in technical equ p-inuit, is, theicfoic, cut of date. The policy of the board toward engaging local artists is' described in these words: “Entertainment formed the bulk cf the programmes, and no effort was spared to secure the services of new artists. The results, however, have been disappointing, for it -s the c-xpei io.nco that only a ' small percentage of those /Wanted auditions reach the required standard. While the board lias endeavoured to oncouiage nit ists, it- has been forced to the conclusion that the number of artists in the Dominion capable of maintaining a satisfactory standaic! 13 'eomparativaly small. This :is leadily understood, however, when consideration is given to the relatively small population of the Dominion. The balance-sheet for the- year shows an excess of income over expenditure of £23 1 7, after provision has been made for a heavy depreciation of assets, writing off half the cost of the arbitration proceed.ngs with the Radio Broadcasting Company of New Zealand, Limited, and transferring £314,000 to the renewals and replacements reserve.
