MOTORISTS’ PROTEST. (Per Press Association — Copyright.) AUCKLAND, September 29. The motor associations are definitely of the opinion that the Government iPdA: accept a certain amount of . responsibility for Constable Stewart’s injufi'esy declared the .president of the Automobile Association, in his opening comment -to-day on the state of the law relating : to motor car conversions. He said apparently the justice department did 'not realise the -necessity for' (meeting requests for an -amendment of tht law. Motorists conld not understand the Department’s attitude in clinging to the term conversion. They claimed that the taking of a motor car was nothing but theft. In modt cages 'there was not the slightest inJttritiion to (return the car. He was cjinfident. that jo. Ir thefts would be minimised if the law were amended as requested. Mr Grayson added that -other motor •associations expressed a wish to be associated -with Auckland in making a present to Constable Stewart, and it was hoped to increase the s um to a figure more in keeping with the constable’s brave action.

The mayor of Auckland was asked to make the presentation.

Superintendent S. Till. in charge ,of the LAucldand police district, said police realised the seriousness of the position, and lie had sent a report to the commissioner personally. He could see no reason why the law should toot be altered to provide for-a greater penalty than three months’ loir conversion. Ho felt, however, thatmot- : orists themselves were not altogether blameless. tM«tnv were careless about locking ‘their oars before leaving them fill ai street.
