MEAT TRANSPORT

THE NEW METHOD. FOLLOWED BY ARGENTINE. 1 United Press Association—By Electric 'J olograph— Copyright.; LONDON, Sep. 28. Presumably due to the success of the Australian shipment of chilled beef in gas, a South American firm consigned a quantity of beef in gas from the River Plate, which, despite its being carried at the remarkably high temperature or 30j| degrees Fahrcheit, arrived at London in a condition equivalent to that of ordinary chilled consignments.

The fast Australian shipment was the ordinary chilled beef temperature carried at 294 degrees, compared to the ordinary chilled beef temperature of 284 degrees. Thus there has been a raising of the temperature of the chilled beef, which .is arriving from overseas virtually fresh. Commenting on this aspect, a Commonwealth veterinary representative, Mr R. H. Heyward, says that it is unnecessary for Australia to be alarmed at the prospect of South America depriving Australia of the prospective benefit of this new method of chilling, because laboratory experiments have shown that the temperature at which the first South American gas-chilled shipment was carried is equally suitable for taking beef from Australia. Indeed, probably it will use even a higher temperature.
