SCHOOLS CONFER
A BIG SCHEME. (Petr Press Association — Copyright t WELLINGTON, September 28. At the Dominion Conference of New Zealand school committees to-dey, a Wellington motion advocating removal of education from political control by the appointment of a National Council of Education, met with general approval and was carried unanimously. The mover, Mr Ingram, suggested the Council should consist of seven members, one representing the Government, one the teaching profession, two local edtication authorities, one. primary school committees, one commercial interests and one' trades and labour councils. The Council should hold office"for five' years and retirement should be by rotation, to ensure a continuity of policy, lie further suggested that under the Council should be district councils, consisting' of representatives' of mtinicipa] councils, employers and employees school committees, teaching profession, agricultural organisations and additional members to be elected to represent the general public on the same basis as councils and hospital boards. The district councils to have control of education iii the respective areas under the national council. r ’ •
The conference carried a remit of South Canterbury advocating • the purging of the roll and elimination of unsatisfactory teachers, and another recommending grading in broad groups instead of the present numerical o rdei\ A large number of recommendations for subission. to the department were also carried.
